Kanab, Utah - May 8th, 2024

It is the little things that you stumble upon that make exploring so much fun. We drove to Kanab, from Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, in search of a good internet connection. What we found was a cute, little town to stroll around.

Wednesday, we took care of some needed items. Starting off in the morning, we not only dumped and filled our tanks, we recalibrated our fresh tank sensor. Since it was late when we arrived the day before, we didn’t dump and fill on the way into the campground. Before we left home, Keith had done a factory reset on our tank sensors because we were having “no communication” errors on our gray water tank sensor again. Our Winnebago dealer had replaced the sensor for us under warranty, but the errors came back. The factory reset was probably a mistake. Not only did it not fix the gray tank sensor error, it seemed to throw off the fresh tank sensor. When we were filling our fresh tank at the beginning of the trip, we used our flow meter (paid link). The meter said we put in 40 gallons which should be 80% of our capacity, but the fresh tank sensor read only 65%. Unfortunately, you can only recalibrate the sensor when the tank is empty. The tank was pretty low Wednesday morning, so we thought it was a good time to recalibrate.

We filled our spare water cubes with what remained in the tank, about 8 gallons. Then we opened the fresh tank drain to get the last remaining bit out. After recalibrating the fresh tank sensor, we filled the tank with the flow meter until the tank started overflowing. The fresh tank sensor was a little slow registering the amount in the tank for about the first ten gallons. Then it was tracking pretty closely with the flow meter. The sensor read 100% full when the flow meter registered 46 gallons. The tank started overflowing when the meter read 48 gallons. Our tank is supposed to be 50 gallons. So neither measurement is super precise, but we are now confident they are within a few gallons of reality.

We couldn’t recalibrate the gray tank sensor because it was still reporting a “no-com” error. We’ve never relied on the gray tank sensor anyway. The gray tank is slightly larger than our fresh tank, so as long as we dump our gray tank every time we fill our fresh, we should never overflow the gray tank. No sensor needed.

After we were done messing with our tanks, we drove to the little town of Kanab, just 30 minutes away. We needed some fast, reliable internet to upload a video and to download some documents. There was no AT&T nor Verizon signal in the campground. The campground provided free wifi, but we had trouble connecting to it, at least from our camp site. When we were able to connect, it was incredibly slow. About all it was good for was to download our emails…overnight.

We parked by the library and park in town. There was a great cell signal there. The library also had free wifi, but, again, it was slow. However, it was not as slow as the campground’s wifi. Using our AT&T cell signal, we were able to upload and download what we needed in no time.

From there, we walked the few blocks over to Center Street, the main drag in town. There were several blocks of cute shops up and down the street. We tried going into Jakey Leigh’s cafe and bakery, but it was after 2 pm and they were closing up shop for the day. Instead, we went to the Brown Box Bakeshop. They served a local homemade ice cream called Nate and Bobbie’s. For some reason, we opted for the sweet rolls and craft soda instead. Ann had a cinnamon roll with Outlaw Orange Cream soda while Keith chose the orange sweet roll paired with a Boylan ginger ale. It was all tasty, but way more sugar than we needed to consume. We would probably have been better off with the ice cream. Next time.

All along the street were plaques about the actors and actresses who had performed in films and TV series in the area. Because so many have been filmed near Kanab, it is known as Utah’s Little Hollywood. Each sign gave a short biography of one actor. We noticed that the rooms at the historic Parry Lodge were named after actors and writers of Utah’s Little Hollywood, such as Zane Grey and Ronald Reagan.

So our need for an internet connection led us to Kanab. Strolling the town was a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
